I will commend Hayes for making a bar with more back sweep, the market is FLOODED with 8/5 degree bars that all feel the same. I have uniquely shaped wrists anatomy and I've been using a 16 degree sweep handlebar for years and it's been pretty comfortable. The 20 degree bar is just a bit too much for me, but definitely usable and comfortable. I think an 18 degree sweep is probably my sweet spot.
The HUGE flaw in this design is the forward sweep, which is necessary, happens too close to the clamping face plate edge that you need to use a narrow faceplate stem. A standard stem with a 50-53mm faceplate looks like it contacts the forward bend in the bar at the edges, causing a potential stress riser. Forget about mounting a handlebar mounted bike light next to the stem. Also, they texturize the bend at the clamping edge... Why, you can't clamp on that, and the consumer is paying for something that is not usable.
Better designed bars that I have used:
SQLabs
Corvus Sweet16
Whisky Milhouse
I'm glad I didn't pay full retail. These go to the spare parts bin.
I replaced the stock 368g 680mm aluminum bars on my Priority 600 with these cut to 720mm. I used Trek's ergo grips. I've been on two rides, through all the varieties of pavement and un-pavement I usually ride on and grades up past 20%. The weight is off my hands. It's easier to tuck my elbows in for some aero, or to rest my hands on the pointy inner bends. Rough stuff is magically smoother - though washboard is still awful - and I found myself bombing through sections I am usually more careful on for fear of getting a big shock through the bars. I don't quite understand how - I don't see or feel the bars flex while I ride - but they are much more comfortable. On the old bars I generally was finding alternate positions to keep my hands from falling asleep, but not on these. My old bars and grips had little horns on the end for a bar-end neutral hand position. I don't think that would work as well on these due to the 20 degree back sweep (vs the stock 6). I am so glad I found these before installing something with less sweep.
As others have written here, my wrists were experiencing a lot of pain after several miles on the bike. These bars have changed that. I would like to suggest to some other users that they can change the "upsweep" these bars seem to have to a level position (at the grip area) or even a "downsweep" by simply rotating the bars in the stem and adjusting your brakes and shifters accordingly. I have played around with this adjustment feature quite a lot to get that perfect fit for me. Hope that is helpful, and thank you, ProTaper, for this product.
I had some Rest issues years ago and started using alt bars. When the Carnegie was discontinued in this country, I bought my first set of 2020s. Worth every penny, and the shapely design never ceases to amaze my friends. I have them On my hardtail, full suspension, and fat bike
Great bar well-constructed and provides a comfortable grip angle
